Street Days.

„There is no Pride on a Dead Planet!“

ENGLISH

50 years ago, the Stonewall uprising kicked off the Christopher Street Liberation Day and the subsequent Pride movement. Although many things have changed since June 1969, there is still a lot to be done. Homosexuality is still – or once again – punishable by death in many parts of the world, and queer people are being threatened and attacked on a daily basis. This is why, even after 50 years, the Pride demonstrations are still crucial for the LGBTQIA* community and the fight for our rights.

After 50 years, we have also reached a point where we should stop and ask ourselves: How far have we really come since 1969? Which ‘old’ issues have we overcome and which ‘new’ issues have arisen over the last decades?

Over the last decades, the climate crisis has posed an ever-increasing threat to all life on this planet. The climate crisis may not care about our sexual orientation or gender identity, but it will affect all of us, nonetheless.

Even today, people in many parts of the world are suffering from heat waves, droughts, floods, and other environmental disasters induced by the climate crisis. Usually, those who contribute the least to the climate crisis are affected the most. And more often than not, the people who are most affected cannot buy their way out of the devastating effects of the climate crisis.

Ironically, many of the companies that exploit humans, nonhumans, and the environment all around the world position themselves as tolerant supporters of the LGBTQIA* movement in Europe and the US.

The LGBTQIA* movement has always fought for social justice.

Today, more than ever, it is vital that we also take on the fight for climate justice. Solidarity with queers all around the world obliges us to actively fight against the climate crisis instead of literally fueling global warming with our excessive consumption and CO2 emissions.

This is why we demand that the LGBTQIA* community, and especially Pride organizers and participants, step up and take the following measures:

Go Vegan

By now, it is common knowledge that animal products not only cause endless suffering for nonhumans but are also one of the biggest contributors to global warming and the climate crisis. New studies show that we could reduce our dietary carbon footprints by 49% percent if we all switched to a plant-based diet1. Therefore, a plant-based/vegan diet and way of living are crucial.

A shift towards veganism at Pride would send a clear political message against the climate crisis and the exploitation of sentient beings.

This is why we demand that organizers of Pride demos and street festivals create an environment that supports and establishes vegan and sustainable catering at these events.

No Trucks at Pride

There were no trucks at the first Christopher Street Liberation Day, only hundreds of people marching with signs. Since then, however, trucks with high pollutant emissions have even been getting special permits to drive through the streets at Pride.

These trucks emit enormous amounts of CO2 and particulate matter, which is only augmented by the slow walking speed and the constant stop and go at Pride.

This is why we are calling for a boycott of these vehicles at Pride marches. Exceptions should be made for support vehicles for people who cannot attend Pride demonstration on foot or by bicycle. However, priority should still be given to choosing the most climate-friendly support vehicles.

Move Away from Consumerism and Capitalism

In the many years following the first Christopher Street Liberation Day demonstration,

Pride has shifted away from a protest against the oppression of homosexuals, trans* and other queer people, against racism, and against police violence, towards a large-scale consumerist event.

But are cheaply produced single-use products with rainbow prints really an expression of what defines us as queer community?

Cheap single-use products and fast fashion are not only harmful to the environment but also directly exploit other people for our consumption. These products are mostly produced under working conditions that are hazardous to both health and life, and are then transported over long distances in large quantities. Although we may all love colorful balloons, glitter, and confetti, they use up immense amounts of resources for a brief and fleeting moment of enjoyment.
